Project Description

Extreme seismic stability is one of the many features that make Faubion — the first new school built for Portland Public Schools in 10 years — stand out structurally. It’s also highly energy-efficient, designed to LEED Gold Certification standards, and its educational model is attracting nationwide attention.

The first 3 to PhD® campus in the country, the building incorporates Concordia University’s College of Education within Faubion PK-8 School. It also features health and community services, including a wellness clinic, demonstration kitchen, food bank and family resource room. An early childhood education center accepts infants as young as 6 weeks old. The school has a cafeteria, gym, music room, library, STEAM and maker spaces, and a three-story atrium at the entrance.

The school serves up to 800 children in the Northeast Portland neighborhood, where the vast majority are low income. The building is framed in structural steel with composite decking. Brick and gray corrugated metal siding trim the exterior.

Energy Trust of Oregon awarded the project received Honorable Mention in the Fourth Annual High Performance Building Awards. The project was also a finalist in the Excellence in Concrete competition sponsored by the Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association.

The new school was made possible by a voter-approved bond levy with an additional $15 million contributed by neighboring Concordia University.
