Project Description
Bethel School District in Eugene replaced its 67-year-old middle school thanks to voters approving a $99 million bond levy in 2020. Todd built a new 85,000-square-foot Cascade Middle School next to the existing school while it was occupied. The school has the capacity to serve 550 students.
Todd Construction was awarded the opportunity to build the school after submitting the lowest responsible bid. The design of the new school includes:
- A Commons at the center of the school from two welcome plazas to serve as the school’s hub.
- A two-story classroom wing radiating from the south side of the Commons with a music wing on the north side and a gym and administrative extending to the west
- Food service area with tiered, lighted seating
- A gym with a separate, secure entrance for community and off-hours use.
- Media Center
- Garage door that opens to covered outdoor space when the weather is nice
- Renovation of the existing music building into a community health clinic
- New synthetic turf softball field for Willamette High School between the middle and high school, which converts to a larger soccer field.
The long hallways in the building include learning/breakout spaces with skylights, and the classrooms are designed for daylighting and outdoor views.
The new school was built on the southeast corner of the existing school site to avoid disruption of classes. Once the new school was complete, the old school was demolished, and additional site improvements took over that space. As part of the project, Todd also renovated a community building on the campus into the Bethel Community Health Clinic.
The project was completed in the fall of 2024.
