Project Description
The project goal was to transform an outdated facility to one that accommodated the predominant use of digital media, fostered individual and group study in a variety of settings, added classroom space, reorganized the storage of the physical collection and introduced controlled natural lighting.
The existing three story Clark library was built in two phases: a steel framed structure dating from 1957 and a concrete framed addition built twenty years later. By 2010, not only was the organization of the existing building ill-suited to the desired use, the building required a substantial upgrade of its infrastructure. In the renovation project only a new exterior stair was added; the remainder of the building was completely gutted and remodeled. A roof replacement, new electrical service, new energy efficient chilled beam HVAC systems were introduced, the structural system of the building was substantially upgraded and new fire alarm and sprinkler systems were added.
