Project Description
An academic program that was scattered about campus came under one roof with the opening of the George Fox University Engineering Maker Hub.
The 16,600-square-foot space was renovated to accommodate the college’s exponential growth in its engineering program. A key component is the 6,000-square-foot configurable project-build space or Maker Hub. It’s a place where students work on collaborative multi-disciplinary teams to design, build and test a variety of prototypes.
The space, located within the Klages Center Building, also includes:
- A computer design lab
- Machine, welding and woodworking shop
- Additive manufacturing lab
- Design studios
- Environmental, geotechnical, construction and transportation lab spaces
- Tool room
Tremendous transformation
The building underwent a tremendous transformation. It was a 50-year-old structure previously used as a dining hall and kitchen that had been expanded during several earlier renovations. One of the most challenging aspects of the remodel was aligning the floors. The sloped floors that led to the kitchen drain were no longer necessary for an engineering lab.
Todd Construction worked with a specialty subcontractor to identify an epoxy floor covering that would offer longevity as well as color and texture that fit with the architect’s design. While grinding and pad leveling were required to provide the floor’s new seamless look, the solution offered tens of thousands of dollars in savings to the client.
The renovation also called for pulling out the old ceiling and exposing all the previously hidden mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Todd’s commitment to high-quality craftsmanship gives the exposed ceilings, ductwork and mechanical elements visual appeal.
The tight four-month schedule was another challenge on such an extensive renovation. Todd had to complete the project over the summer because classes were scheduled for the new space beginning in the fall of 2016.
The project’s success can be contributed to a perfect marriage of a client who knew what they wanted, an architect who gave it to them and a contractor, Todd Construction, which carried out the plans while meeting the schedule and coming in under budget.
